Gravel-Base Preparation

Base rock is structure, not surfacing. Its job is spreading load from a driveway, pad, or slab down into ground that could never carry that load directly. It only works when the subgrade beneath is shaped, firm, and dry enough to compact, and when the rock goes in as lifts that get compacted as they go. Dumping gravel onto soft ground buys a season, not a decade.

The subgrade decides everything

Base rock cannot be stronger than what it sits on. If the subgrade is soft, organic, or saturated, the rock migrates down into it under load and disappears — which is exactly what owners are describing when they say the driveway 'eats gravel every year.' Preparation means stripping organics, shaping the surface to a consistent grade with a crown or fall, removing or replacing unsuitable material, and proof-rolling to find the soft spots before they are buried. A wet spot found during preparation costs one machine hour. The same spot found after the rock is placed costs the rock too.

Why lifts and compaction matter

Rock placed in one thick layer compacts only near the surface, leaving a loose bottom that keeps settling. Placed in lifts, each layer gets densified before the next is spread, and the whole section locks together into something that behaves like a slab rather than like a pile. Moisture is part of it — material at the right moisture compacts and material that is bone-dry or sopping does not, regardless of how many passes it sees. Where the ground beneath is marginal, a geotextile separation fabric between subgrade and rock keeps the two from mixing and is usually cheaper than the rock it saves.

Choosing material for the job

Different layers do different work, and using one material for all of them wastes money in one direction or performance in the other:

  • Pit run or coarse subbase — bulk structure over weak subgrade, where the job is bridging
  • Crushed base with fines — the load-spreading layer that actually locks up under compaction
  • Wear course — the top surface that takes traffic and gets renewed periodically
  • Drain rock — free-draining material where water has to move through rather than sit
  • Separation fabric — not gravel at all, but often the difference between base that holds and base that sinks

Where base fails in this valley

Spring is the honest test. Frost leaves the ground, subgrades saturate, and any section built on unprepared soil or without drainage shows it inside weeks: ruts, washboard, pumping fines, rock disappearing into mud. The reflex is to order more gravel, but more rock on a failed subgrade fails the same way. The durable fix is almost always underneath — shaped and compacted subgrade, crown so water sheds, ditches so it leaves, and separation where the ground is weak.
