What the valley floor is made of

North of the Polson moraine, the Flathead Valley's near-surface ground is glacial: till, outwash, and fine lake-bed silts and clays laid down by an ancestral Flathead Lake that ponded behind the moraine as the ice retreated — commonly with lake beds sitting directly on till. (Not Glacial Lake Missoula, which flooded the valleys south of Polson.)

How shallow the water table runs

The Evergreen aquifer between the Whitefish and Flathead Rivers covers roughly 40 square miles with a median static water level of 12 feet below grade across 860 reported wells — rising each spring to a May–June peak. County onsite-wastewater rules require seasonal groundwater monitoring where groundwater is, or may be, shallow; monitoring runs through spring high water.

Montana's statewide floor is a 30 psf minimum design roof snow load. The gradient matters: West Glacier carries ~46% more load than Whitefish at essentially the same elevation. Confirm the design value for a specific parcel with the building official.

Frost depth — the honest answer

There is no published county-wide or statewide frost-line depth for the Flathead. Montana's residential code adoption leaves footing frost depth to the local jurisdiction, and Flathead County operates no building department — so the governing number comes from the permitting authority for your parcel (City of Kalispell, Whitefish, or Columbia Falls inside city limits; the Montana State Building Codes Bureau elsewhere). The working season

At the MSU research center in Creston (1980–2025 records), the average frost-free season runs about 124 days — last spring frost around May 19, first fall frost around September 19, with wide year-to-year swings (99 days in 1992, 156 in 2009). That window is what reseeding, establishment, and finish-work schedules are built around.

How fire behaves here

Flathead County's fire regime is classed mixed-to-high severity, with summer fires typically running southwest to northeast on the prevailing wind. The 2021 county wildfire plan deliberately extended the mapped wildland-urban interface to include valley bottoms — grass and brush carry fast fire too. Burned acreage countywide climbed from ~60,000 acres (1930–late 1980s) back to 1.1 million acres (1990–2018).
