The machine classes land-management work runs on: excavators for digging and structure work, skid steers and compact track loaders as the do-everything platform, compact tractors for mowing and grading, and the attachments — mulchers, grapples, brush cutters, trenching and demolition tools — that turn one carrier into many machines.
In this valley: Access decides equipment more than the job does: gate width, overhead lines, and ground firmness pick the machine before the work does.

Trees
On a work site, trees are three different things: assets to protect (mature keepers that define a property's value), obstacles to remove (trees in the building envelope or access corridor), and fuel to manage (ladder-fuel conifers near structures). Deciding which is which — before machines arrive — is the single most consequential call in a clearing project.
In this valley: Flathead Valley conifers near structures are a defensible-space question as much as a landscaping one.

Brush
Brush is the middle stage of land reclaiming itself — woody shrubs and saplings past what a mower shears cleanly but short of timber. It's the stage that decides cost: caught early it's a mowing pass, established it's forestry mulching, ignored long enough it's clearing.

Gravel
Gravel is a system, not a topping: a driveway or pad that holds is shaped subgrade, compacted base rock, and a wear course — in that order. Gravel spread on unshaped ground is sacrificial; it migrates to the ditch and into the mud until the structure underneath gets built.

Drainage
Drainage is the discipline of giving water a better path than the one it's taking — crowns, swales, ditches, and grades that move runoff away from foundations, driveways, and usable ground. Almost every chronic site problem in a wet-spring valley traces back to it.
In this valley: The Flathead's high seasonal groundwater means some 'drainage problems' are actually water-table facts — telling the two apart is step one.

Retaining walls
Retaining walls hold a grade change so the ground above and below both stay usable. Low landscape walls and dry-stacked stone are earthwork; walls carrying engineered loads — tall walls, surcharged walls, anything a structure depends on — require an engineer's design and the appropriate specialty contractor. Boaz builds the site around walls and handles the earthwork; engineered wall systems belong to their designers.

Culverts
Culverts carry water under driveways and access roads instead of over them. An undersized, crushed, or silted culvert is behind a large share of washed-out rural access — and where a lane meets a public road, the approach culvert usually involves the road authority's requirements.

Driveways & access roads
A rural driveway is a small civil-engineering project: route selection, clearing, subgrade shaping, drainage (crown, ditches, culverts), base compaction, and surfacing. Built in that order it lasts decades; built as 'gravel on a path' it becomes an annual expense.
In this valley: New approaches onto public roads generally need an approach permit — settled before the corridor is cut.

Topsoil
Topsoil is the site's growing layer and its most undervalued material. Good practice strips and stockpiles it before earthwork so it returns as the finish layer — burying it under a pad or hauling it off with spoil is paying twice: once to lose it, again to import it.

Fill
Fill is material placed to raise or shape ground — and the word hides the distinction that matters: structural fill is selected material placed in compacted lifts that can carry loads; random fill is whatever got dumped, and it settles. What a pad sits on decides what the building does for the next fifty years.

Excavation
Excavation is earthmoving with intent: cutting, filling, grading, and shaping ground to a plan — pads that carry structures, trenches prepared for lines, grades that drain. It's the work type most other site work depends on, which makes its schedule everyone's schedule.

Demolition
Demolition is controlled removal: verify utilities dead, answer the asbestos question on older structures, permit per jurisdiction, take the structure down in a planned direction, and leave ground that's ready for what's next. The tear-down is the fast part; the verification sequence around it is the job.

Utilities
Buried utilities are the non-negotiable of ground disturbance: Montana 811 locates public lines free of charge before any dig — and marks only public lines. Private runs (power to outbuildings, irrigation, old septic) are the owner's knowledge to share. Boaz trenches and prepares; live connections belong to licensed utility contractors.

Septic systems
On unsewered Flathead parcels, the septic system quietly runs the site plan: 100-foot setbacks from wells and surface water, protected drainfield ground nothing may drive over, and — in this county — groundwater monitoring rather than perc tests deciding where a drainfield can live. Excavators dig the evaluation pits; county-licensed installers build the systems.
