Standing water

Ponding that appears every spring and lingers is the Flathead Valley's signature complaint — high groundwater plus flat or bowl-shaped grading. Some standing water is a grading fix; some is groundwater that grading can't cure, which changes what's worth spending. Telling the two apart is the first job.

What it looks like

  • The same pond in the same spot every spring
  • Water that appears without rain (groundwater signature)
  • Mosquito-breeding puddles that outlast every dry week

The work that fixes it

Worth knowing in this county

  • High seasonal groundwater is exactly what the county's septic groundwater monitoring measures — if the wet spot is near a planned drainfield, the two conversations are one

Before you reach out

  • Track timing: after rain only, or seasonal regardless of rain?
  • Photos at the worst moment beat descriptions every time

Common questions

Is standing water always fixable?

Surface-shaped ponding usually is. Where the water table itself surfaces seasonally, the honest fix is working with it — raised grades, wet-tolerant use of that ground — not fighting it.
