Driveway and Access-Road Excavation

A rural driveway that lasts is built in layers and in order: route selection, clearing, subgrade shaping, drainage (crown, ditches, culverts), compacted base rock, then the wear surface. Skip the middle steps and the gravel on top becomes an annual expense. In the Flathead Valley, the public-road connection usually needs an approach permit from the road authority — settled before the corridor is cut.
Route first, machine second
The cheapest driveway is the one routed well: following ground that drains, avoiding the wet swale that will swallow base rock forever, keeping grades gentle enough for winter, and preserving the trees worth keeping. Ten minutes of flagging a better line saves years of maintenance on a bad one. Sight distance at the road, turning room at the house end, and space for snow storage all get decided here.
The build sequence that actually holds
Each layer exists to protect the one above it:
- Corridor clearing wide enough for the lane plus ditches and snow
- Subgrade shaped and compacted — the road's real foundation is the dirt, not the gravel
- Drainage built in: crown so water leaves the surface, ditches to carry it, culverts where it must cross
- Base rock placed and compacted in lifts — structure, not decoration
- Wear course last, after the heavy construction traffic is done with the lane
Why valley driveways fail in spring
Breakup is the annual exam. Frost leaves the ground, subgrades saturate, and any lane without a crown, without functioning ditches, or with an undersized culvert shows it within weeks — ruts, washboard, gravel migrating into the mud. The fix is rarely 'more gravel'; it's the structure underneath. A lane rebuilt once with real drainage routinely outlasts a decade of top-dressing the old one.
Permits and the public-road connection
Where a new driveway meets a public road, the approach — its location, width, culvert, and sight lines — generally requires an approach permit from whichever authority owns the road. On covered ground-disturbance projects, Flathead County's soil-disturbance weed plan applies too. Both are estimate-stage questions; neither is a surprise anyone enjoys after the corridor is cut.
