Gravel and Surface Restoration

Gravel drives and pads fail from the bottom up, not the top down. Potholes, washboard, and soft spots are usually drainage and base problems finally showing through the surface, which is why adding a load of rock on top buys a season at most. Restoration means re-shaping the surface for crown and drainage, dealing with the base where it has failed, then placing and compacting material that will actually lock together.
Read the failure before ordering rock
Gravel surfaces fail in recognizable patterns, and each pattern points at a different cause. Diagnosing it first is what keeps the repair from becoming an annual subscription.
- Potholes: water sitting in one place, usually because the surface has gone flat or dished and has nowhere to drain
- Washboard: loose surface material without enough fines to bind, worked into ripples by braking and acceleration
- Soft, pumping spots: the subgrade has failed and fine soil is migrating up into the rock
- Edge loss and rutting at the shoulders: no crown, so water runs the length of the drive instead of off the side of it
- Rock disappearing entirely: the base was never thick enough, and traffic has driven the surface into the ground
Crown and ditch are the whole repair
A gravel surface stays intact only as long as water leaves it quickly. That means a crown — a consistent rise down the centerline so water sheds to both sides — and a place for the water to go once it gets there. On a rural drive that place is usually a shallow ditch or a vegetated shoulder, and if either has silted in or grown over, restoring it is more important than any material placed on top.
The same logic applies to pads and parking areas, which get flat far more often than drives do because flat is what they look like they should be. A pad with no fall holds water in the middle, and a pad that holds water becomes soft in exactly the spot where the heaviest thing on the property parks.
Material and compaction
Not all gravel is a driving surface. Clean, uniformly sized rock drains beautifully and never locks together, which is why a drive surfaced with it stays loose and rides like marbles. A driving surface wants crushed material with fines in it — an angular product with a graded range of sizes that keys together and compacts into a shell. Pit run and larger material belong in the base, under that surface course, not on top of it.
Where the subgrade is soft and stays soft, more rock alone is a slow way to lose money — the material keeps sinking into the same wet spot. The durable fix is drainage plus separation: get the water out from under the surface, and put a barrier between soft native soil and the new base so the two stop mixing. Compaction is what turns placed material into a surface; material dumped, spread, and left to traffic never reaches the density it could have.
Freeze-thaw and the spring window
Northwest Montana works gravel surfaces harder than most climates. Water in the base freezes and heaves, then thaws from the top down in spring while the ground below is still frozen, trapping a saturated layer that has nowhere to drain. That is spring break-up, and it is why a drive that was fine in October is soft and rutted in April.
The practical consequence is scheduling. Restoration done while the subgrade is still saturated compacts poorly and re-ruts immediately, so the work wants to wait until the ground has firmed. Late spring through fall is the workable window, and fall restoration has the advantage of entering winter with correct crown and open ditches — which is exactly what the following spring melt will test. When restoration turns out to need new base depth, ditching, or culverts, it has become an Excavation scope rather than a surface repair.
