Tree, Stump, and Root Removal Considerations

Cutting a tree down is the easy half. What remains, the stump, the root plate, and the void underneath, determines whether the ground can be built on, farmed, or simply walked across. Grinding leaves roots in place and works where the surface only needs to be clean. Full extraction is what you want where footings, buried lines, or grading follow, because decaying roots settle unevenly and leave soft spots that show up years later.
Grinding and extraction solve different problems
Stump grinding chews the stump down below grade and leaves the root system in the soil to decay on its own schedule. It is quick, it disturbs a small footprint, and it is the right call when the goal is a mowable, walkable surface: a yard, a pasture, a trail, a view corridor. The hole gets backfilled with the grindings and soil, and within a season it disappears.
Extraction pulls the stump and the main root plate out of the ground entirely. It disturbs a much larger area, produces a real hole that has to be backfilled with suitable material and compacted, and it takes a machine with the mass to do it. It is what you want when anything structural, buried, or precisely graded is going in over that spot.
The decision is not about tree size. It is about what happens next on that exact piece of ground.
Why buried roots cause settlement
Wood left in the soil rots, and rotting wood loses volume. That does not happen evenly, and it does not happen on a predictable timeline. What it produces is localized subsidence, a low spot that appears in a lawn, a dip in a gravel drive, a crack in a slab poured over an old root plate, or a sag in a line that was trenched straight through decaying material.
The frustrating part is the delay. Ground that looked fine at the end of the job settles seasons later, long after the machine has left, and by then the fix costs far more than extraction would have. This is why the rule of thumb on any footprint that will carry a load is to get the wood out rather than count on it holding up.
The same logic applies to buried slash. Burying limbs and stumps on site to avoid disposal costs is a decision that gets revisited later, usually by whoever tries to build there.
Backfill, holes, and finished grade
Every extracted stump leaves a hole larger than the stump was, because the root plate brings soil with it. Filling that hole properly is part of the job, not a separate one. Dumping the removed material back in and calling it level gives you a spot that settles the first wet spring. Where the surface matters, the hole gets filled with soil that will compact and gets brought slightly above finished grade, since it will settle regardless.
Where a lot of stumps come out of one area, the cumulative disturbance is significant enough that the ground effectively needs rough grading and reseeding afterward. That is where clearing runs into excavation, and it is worth deciding up front whether the job ends at stumps removed or at a surface that is actually ready for the next step.
Timing and site conditions
Frozen ground is often the easiest condition for stump work, because the machine can operate without churning the surrounding surface and root plates break loose cleanly. Saturated spring ground is the worst, since extraction in wet soil produces deep rutting across the whole travel path, and repairing that becomes its own line item.
Before any extraction, call Montana 811. Locates are free and required before ground disturbance, and roots grow toward and around buried lines, which means pulling a root plate can drag a line with it. Public utilities get marked; anything private on the property, including well lines, power to a shop, or irrigation, is the owner's to point out.
